What's in an aroTHERM system, what sets Vaillant apart, and what you don't need to pay for
What's in a Vaillant heat pump system, in plain English
- aroTHERM plus: Vaillant's air source heat pump. The outdoor unit that pulls heat from the air. Comes in 5, 7, 10 and 12kW outputs.
- Natural refrigerant: the aroTHERM plus uses R290, a natural refrigerant that lets it reach higher water temperatures than most heat pumps. That means fewer radiator changes in older homes.
- uniSTOR cylinder: Vaillant's hot water cylinder, sized to the household. Matched to the heat pump so the two talk to each other.
- sensoCOMFORT controls: the controller and room stat. Runs weather compensation, which adjusts the water temperature to the outside temperature so the system runs as cool as it can.
- Hydraulic station: the indoor unit with the pump and valves that connects the outdoor unit to the cylinder and heating. Neat, wall mounted, in the airing cupboard or utility.
- Buffer or volumiser: a small tank that helps the system run smoothly. Fitted where the design needs it.
- Sound: the aroTHERM plus is among the quietest outdoor units made, which matters on a terraced street with the neighbour's bedroom over the fence.
- Warranty: Vaillant's manufacturer warranty, valid with annual servicing and registration.
- MCS certificate: issued at commissioning by us, which releases the £7,500 grant.
What sets Vaillant apart, and what the install involves
- Boiler heritage: Vaillant has made boilers for over a century and heat pumps for decades. The aroTHERM is a mature product with parts on every merchant's shelf.
- Higher flow temperatures: because of the R290 refrigerant, the aroTHERM can run hotter when it needs to. In an older house that often means keeping most of the existing radiators.
- Quiet: the low sound rating means more options for where the outdoor unit goes.
- One brand system: heat pump, cylinder and controls from one maker, which makes fault finding and warranty claims simpler.
- The install: the same as any heat pump: survey and heat loss calculation, outdoor unit on a wall or ground stand, hydraulic station and cylinder inside, dedicated electrical supply, old boiler out, commissioning and certificate. Two to four days.
Honest advice: what's overkill
- The 12kW when the calculation says 7: an oversized aroTHERM cycles, wears and costs more to run. Vaillant makes four sizes for a reason. Fit the one the heat loss says.
- Replacing radiators that don't need it: the aroTHERM's higher flow temperature means many homes keep most of their radiators. Only change the ones the calculation flags.
- Vaillant everything: the aroTHERM, cylinder and controls together make sense. Paying a premium for Vaillant branded pipework, stands or accessories doesn't.
- A Vaillant because you have a Vaillant boiler: the boiler comes out for the grant, so the badge on it doesn't matter. Choose the aroTHERM on its merits, and it has plenty.
- Worth paying for: the sensoCOMFORT control set up properly with weather compensation. It's the difference between a heat pump that costs less than gas to run and one that doesn't.
