Learn MoreNo Heating in Walsall: How It Works and What's Involved
The parts that move heat round your house, why they stop, and what you don't need to pay for
How central heating works, in plain English
- Boiler: heats the water. If it's not firing, nothing downstream will work.
- Pump: pushes the hot water round the radiators and back to the boiler. When it fails the boiler heats up, then cuts out because the heat isn't going anywhere.
- Motorised valves: on system boilers, send the hot water to the radiators, the cylinder, or both. They stick or their motors fail.
- Diverter valve: on a combi, the same job in one valve.
- Room thermostat: tells the boiler the house is cold. If it's not calling for heat, the boiler stays off.
- Programmer or timer: decides when the heating is allowed on. A clock that's drifted or a schedule that's been changed is a common "fault".
- Radiators and TRVs: the TRV is the numbered valve on each radiator. Set to 0 or stuck shut, that radiator stays cold.
- Pressure: too low and the boiler locks out. Check the gauge first.
- Air and sludge: air collects at the top of radiators, sludge at the bottom. Both stop them heating properly.
What usually goes wrong, and what fixing it involves
- Hot water works, heating doesn't, combi: the diverter valve is stuck on hot water. About an hour to replace.
- Hot water works, heating doesn't, system boiler: the heating motorised valve or the pump. A valve motor is a quick swap; a pump is an hour or so.
- Boiler fires but radiators stay cold: the pump, or the thermostat isn't calling. Check the thermostat is set above room temperature and the timer is on before calling.
- Some radiators hot, some cold: TRVs stuck shut, air in the high ones, sludge in the low ones. Bleeding and balancing is a short visit; a sludged radiator needs flushing.
- Nothing works and there's an error code: the boiler itself. See the boiler repair page.
Honest advice: what’s overkill
- A new boiler when the boiler isn't the problem: if the boiler fires and the hot water is fine, the fault is in the heating circuit. Replacing the boiler won't fix a stuck valve or a dead pump.
- A powerflush for one cold radiator: one radiator cold at the bottom can be taken off and flushed on its own. A powerflush is for when most of them are.
- A smart thermostat as a fix: a smart thermostat is a nice upgrade, but it won't fix a pump or a valve. Fix the fault first, upgrade the controls later if you want to.
- Worth paying for: a proper balance of the radiators after any repair. It's the difference between the far radiators being warm and being lukewarm, and it's often skipped.
When to call
Check three things: the thermostat is turned up, the timer is on, and the pressure gauge is above 1 bar. If all three are fine and the radiators are still cold, message us. If the boiler is showing an error code or leaking, switch it off first. Contact me now
