What's in a heat pump quote, in plain English
- Outdoor unit: the heat pump itself, the box that sits outside and pulls heat from the air. Priced by output, 5kW to 12kW for most homes.
- Hot water cylinder: a heat pump can't do instant hot water like a combi, so it stores it. A new cylinder is in every quote unless you already have a suitable one.
- Buffer tank or volumiser: a small tank that helps the system run smoothly. Not every install needs one; the survey says.
- Controls: the heat pump controller and room thermostats, set up for weather compensation so the system runs at the lowest temperature that keeps you warm.
- Pipework and electrics: connecting the outdoor unit to the cylinder and the heating, plus a dedicated electrical supply, which is why we're NICEIC registered.
- Radiator upgrades: heat pumps run cooler than boilers, so some radiators need to be larger. The survey lists which, if any.
- Old boiler removal: the gas boiler comes out, which the grant requires. Included.
- Commissioning and MCS certificate: the system set up, tested and certified. The certificate is what releases the grant.
- Labour: two to four days for a typical home.
- VAT: zero on heat pump installations, so the price you see is the price you pay.
What moves the price
- Size of home: a bigger house needs a bigger heat pump and cylinder. Most three bed homes are at the from £10,000 end.
- Radiators: if several need upsizing, that adds. If the house already has large radiators or underfloor heating, it doesn't.
- Cylinder location: an airing cupboard is easy. Finding space in a house that's only ever had a combi can add pipework.
- Outdoor unit position: close to the cylinder is cheapest. A long pipe run or a difficult wall costs more.
- Insulation: a poorly insulated house needs a bigger heat pump. Sometimes the honest advice is insulate first.
- The grant: £7,500 off for most gas heated homes, £9,000 for oil or LPG. It's the biggest single number in the quote and it's yours as long as the installer is MCS certified.
Honest advice: what's overkill
- An oversized heat pump: bigger is not safer. An oversized heat pump cycles on and off, wears faster and costs more to run. Size to the heat loss calculation, not to nerves.
- Replacing every radiator: only the ones the calculation says. Many homes need two or three changed, not all of them.
- A heat pump in a house that leaks heat: if the survey shows the house needs a 16kW heat pump, the cheaper answer is insulation, then a smaller heat pump. We'll say so.
- Paying for the grant to be “arranged”: the application is part of the job. Anyone charging a fee for it is charging twice.
- Worth paying for: the survey and heat loss calculation. It's free with us, and it's the difference between a heat pump that keeps the house warm at low cost and one that doesn't.
