Signs Your Heating Pump Has Failed

Cold Radiators, Warm Boiler in Walsall

Cold Radiators, Warm Boiler

The boiler fires and gets hot but the heat never reaches the radiators. The pump is not moving the water round.

Humming or Grinding Noise in Walsall

Humming or Grinding Noise

A pump that is seized, stuck or worn makes a low hum or a grinding sound when the heating comes on.

Upstairs Never Warms Up in Walsall

Upstairs Never Warms Up

A weak pump can push water round the ground floor but not up to the bedrooms.

Pump Hot to the Touch in Walsall

Pump Hot to the Touch

A pump casing too hot to hold means it is running but not turning. Switch the heating off and message me.

Not sure it is the pump? Send me a 20 second video of the boiler with the heating on and I will tell you.

Heating Pump Stopped? Do This First

1

Turn the
Heating Off

A pump that is seized or running dry can overheat. Turn the heating off at the thermostat or timer. Hot water on a combi is usually fine to leave on.

2

Check the
Pressure

Look at the gauge on the front of the boiler. If it is below 1 bar the problem may be pressure, not the pump.

3

Message Me
a Photo

Send a photo of the boiler and a photo of the pump if you can see it. I will confirm the fault and give you a fixed price before I come out.

Can I Replace a Central Heating Pump Myself?

A pump on the pipework in an airing cupboard looks like a simple swap, but it is wired into the mains, sits on a live water circuit, and the old valves either side are usually seized. Most DIY attempts end with a flooded cupboard, a tripped fuse board or a pump fitted the wrong way round, and then a call to me anyway.

A pump inside a combi or system boiler is not a DIY job at all. Opening the case is gas work and must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and doing it yourself voids the boiler warranty.

What a Pump Replacement Costs in Walsall

Every pump replacement is a fixed price agreed before I start, based on a photo of your boiler. The price depends on three things: whether the pump sits on the pipework or inside the boiler, the make and model of the boiler, and whether the system needs draining. It always includes the new pump, fitting, refilling and bleeding the system, and checking every radiator before I leave. There is no call out fee on top and no charge for the diagnosis if it turns out to be something else.

A pump replacement is a fraction of the cost of a new boiler. If your boiler is under ten years old and otherwise sound, replacing the pump is nearly always the right call.
