What the Customer Needed
A homeowner here in Walsall got in touch because their hot water system was getting old and not keeping up. The pressure in the house was poor and the cylinder had seen better days. They wanted something reliable that would give them decent hot water without the hassle.
After taking a look, I recommended replacing their old cylinder with an unvented hot water cylinder. I want to explain what that means in plain terms, because it is not as complicated as it sounds.
What an Unvented Cylinder Actually Is
A standard hot water cylinder in older homes relies on a cold water tank, usually in the loft, to feed it. The water flows down by gravity, which is why pressure can feel weak, especially upstairs.
An unvented cylinder is different. It connects directly to the mains water supply coming into your home. Because it is fed straight from the mains, the pressure throughout the house is much stronger. You get a consistent flow at every tap and shower, regardless of which floor you are on.
There is no need for a tank in the loft either, which frees up space and removes one more thing that can go wrong over time.
What I Did on the Day
I removed the old cylinder and disconnected the existing pipework carefully. I then fitted the new unvented cylinder and connected it directly to the mains supply. All the safety controls that are required by law on an unvented system were installed and tested. These include pressure relief valves and an expansion vessel. In plain terms, these are devices that make sure the system operates safely at all times.
Because unvented hot water cylinders operate at mains pressure, the work has to be carried out by a qualified engineer. I hold the relevant qualification to work on unvented systems, and I am also Gas Safe registered, which covers the wider heating work I carry out across Walsall.
The full installation was completed in a single day. The customer had hot water and strong pressure before I left.
The Result for the Homeowner
They now have consistent hot water pressure throughout the house. No more waiting, no more weak flow in the shower. The new cylinder is modern, efficient, and built to last.
