High Flow Hot Water Installed in Cannock

A customer in Cannock got in touch because they were fed up with poor water pressure. The shower was weak, filling the bath took ages, and running two taps at the same time was a struggle. It is a common problem in older homes, and it almost always comes down to the type of hot water system they have.

Their existing setup was a vented cylinder. That is the kind of system that relies on a cold water tank, usually stored in the loft, to feed the hot water cylinder. The pressure you get from it depends on how high that tank sits above the taps. It is never going to match what comes straight out of the mains.

What an Unvented Cylinder Does

An unvented cylinder connects directly to the mains water supply. There is no cold water tank in the loft feeding it. Because it runs off mains pressure, the hot water that comes out of your taps and shower feels completely different. It is stronger, more consistent, and the same pressure you already get from your cold taps.

It is a sealed system, which means it has to be installed by someone who is qualified to work on it. I am Gas Safe registered and hold the relevant unvented cylinder qualification, so this kind of job is something I carry out regularly across Walsall and the surrounding area.

What the Job Involved

The first step was removing the old vented cylinder and decommissioning the cold water tank in the loft. The new unvented cylinder was then fitted and connected directly to the mains.

The controls needed rewiring as part of the conversion. The old system had a basic setup that was not compatible with the new cylinder, so I replaced and rewired the controls to work correctly with it. This covers things like the immersion heater and the thermostat that manages water temperature.

Everything was then fitted neatly inside the airing cupboard. The customer wanted it all tidy and accessible, so I made sure the pipework and components were arranged properly rather than just tucked in wherever they would fit.

Once the installation was complete, I ran through the system checks, set the water temperature to the correct level, and made sure all the safety controls were working as they should. Unvented cylinders operate at mains pressure, so the safety components have to be right.

The Result for the Customer

The difference was noticeable straight away. Hot water at proper mains pressure, a shower that actually performs, and no more waiting around for the bath to fill. The airing cupboard looks clean and organised, and the customer has controls that are straightforward to use.
