What the Customer Was Dealing With

I got a call from a homeowner in Walsall who had noticed a damp patch near one of their radiators. It had not been there long, but they were right to act on it quickly. A leaking pipe close to a radiator can cause damage to floors, walls and joists if it is left alone. Water finds its way into places you cannot see, and by the time it becomes obvious, the problem has often got much worse.

The customer wanted someone to come out, find where the water was coming from, and sort it properly.

Finding the Source of the Leak

When I arrived I checked the radiator and the pipework running to and from it. Sometimes a leak at a radiator is coming from the valve. That is the fitting you use to control how hot the radiator gets. Other times it is a joint in the pipe itself that has started to weep. Weeping just means a very slow drip or seepage of water from a connection.

On this job, the leak was coming from a section of pipe near the radiator. Over time, connections can loosen or the material around them can wear, and that is what had happened here.

Carrying Out the Repair

Once I knew exactly where the problem was, I isolated that part of the heating system. Isolating means shutting off the water to just that section so I could work on it safely without draining the whole system down. I then repaired the pipe and made sure the connection was solid and watertight before testing the system again.

After the repair I ran the heating to check everything was working as it should. No drips, no damp, and the radiator was heating up properly.

Why It Is Worth Getting This Seen to Quickly

A slow drip from a radiator pipe does not always make a big puddle straight away. Sometimes the water runs along a pipe and appears somewhere completely different to where the actual fault is. That is why it is worth getting someone in to trace it properly rather than trying to patch it yourself without knowing the full picture.

If you leave it, the water can get into floorboards, plasterwork and insulation. What starts as a small repair can turn into a much bigger job.
